How to Foster a Love of Reading in Your Kids

Children who love to read have a superpower. They can travel anywhere, learn anything, and never feel truly alone. But that love does not usually happen by accident. Let children choose their own books, even if those choices are graphic novels or books far below their reading level. The goal is to build the habit of reading for pleasure, not to impress anyone with literary difficulty. Read aloud together long after your children can read independently. There is something magical about sharing a story and the bonding that happens during read-aloud time is irreplaceable. Visit the library regularly and make it an event. Let them get their own library card. Create cozy reading nooks around the house with good lighting and comfortable seating. Model reading yourself. Children who see their parents reading for pleasure are far more likely to become readers themselves. Talk about books at the dinner table. Ask what everyone is reading and what they think about it.

Love shows up in packed lunches, bedtime stories, and showing up when it matters.
