Navigating the Teenage Years as a Family
The teenage years have a reputation for being difficult but they can also be some of the most rewarding years of parenting. Listen more than you talk. Your teenager needs to know that you are a safe person to come to with problems without immediately jumping into lecture mode. Respect their need for privacy while maintaining open communication. A closed door is not a rejection of you. It is a normal developmental step toward independence. Choose your battles wisely. Not every issue needs to be a confrontation. Sometimes letting them wear the outfit you hate or stay up an hour later than you prefer is the right call. Stay curious about their world. Ask about their friends, their music, the shows they are watching. Even if you do not understand or like what you hear, the fact that you are interested matters more than you know. Remember that teenagers need their parents just as much as toddlers do, perhaps even more. They just express it differently.
